Liverpool's Cody Gakpo gets rousing welcome in Togo

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo - Liverpool Football Club striker, Cody Gakpo, has paid a visit to his father's native country, Togo, during his holidays.

Instead of heading to a luxurious resort or sandy beach, the 26-year-old decided to connect with his roots in Togo, the country of his father's birth.

Gakpo played a key role in Liverpool's successful campaign, making a significant impact when called upon during the Premier League season.

According to Transfermarkt, he tallied 18 goals and seven assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, contributing 25 goal contributions that proved crucial in helping the Reds secure their 20th English league title was not secured but he did play a key role in the team.

During his visit, Gakpo was welcomed with traditional drumming, dance, and cultural attire, showcasing the rich heritage of the Ewe people, prominent in Togo.

He proudly held the Togolese flag during the welcome ceremony.

The trip wasn't solely about celebration; he was seen distributing meals and handing out Liverpool jerseys to children — a gesture that spoke volumes about his heart and humility.

Gakpo's visit reflects his desire to connect with his ancestral ties and contribute positively to the community.

He has time left before joining Liverpool for pre-season training. Liverpool’s preparations for the 2025/26 campaign begin with a friendly against Preston North End on July 13 — the same day as the Club World Cup final.

Despite being linked to potential transfer rumours, Gakpo remains focused on his Liverpool career.
